When Jessie Woletz (Seaweed Sway) first reached out, I was going to submit "Mosquito" (bit.ly/bendandbreathe) cuz it sounds like how I've been feeling, watching what's being done to the Palestinian cells of our unhealthy human organism and feeling so full of that fierce angerlovegriefpower that i could explode … but instead, given the time of year that she reached out around the winter solstice and just how deeply we need to help each other to carry the flame through the darkest nights / times ... and feeling the deep damage these atrocities do to our nervous systems even just *watching* this fucked up situation, seeing the faces of children orphaned and in shock and covered in concrete dust repeat in our minds... to be doing everything we can but ultimately feeling powerless and frustrated and heartbroken... to feel the devastating loss of human life and the cancer of hate eating away at our collective human potential... it felt like *this* was actually the right song. We have to let our hearts break. We have to fall into community, into music, into each other… not into despair or into silence… that’s my clumsy way of saying why i chose to offer up WINTER LULLABY to you, dear human. how this song was born:
I wrote the first line/melody in 2015 and performed it as "Winter Hymn" with Chelsea Coleman, Kendra McKinley and my Secret Choir at a Solstice show I put together at Lost Church that year... this became one of my first patreon posts ever ( www.patreon.com/posts/hopeful-new-year-3968419 )! Then in 2022 after a really fucked up year, the rest plopped out when I just neeeeeded to write and sing it to help soothe my broken nervous system. So, "Winter Lullaby" was released on December 2, 2022 as part of a 2nd 9-song album made with my dear friend Chelsea Coleman (who is also part of this mixtape), celebrating our shared love of advent songs.
