about

Brian Belknap lives in SF, CA and New Orleans, LA, building bridges between the two - Bay to Bayou. He enjoys playing music on the street as a one-man-band and now has a puppet that accompanies him.

I met Brian at one of the first Seaweed Sway shows at the Make-Out Room, back around 2010. He handed me his CD, which I still enjoy. He kept showing up, and supporting the shows. Little did I know, he would become one of my favorite collaborators. During covid and even a little bit before, I had put down this project to regroup and rest, and thought I was done with it. We met for a catchup, and his appreciation for this project reminded me what it was all about, and made me believe in it in a new way. We share an appreciation of old-school promotion & community-connecting. We've had the joy of collaborating on multiple shows in more recent years, including recently at the Lost Church! The choir I'm in Conspiracy of Venus even got to sing Brian's song Highwire at this show. Brian contributed a lot to this project. Look out for him in New Orleans in the Spring, but I'm sure he'll be back in SF to visit. -Jessie

lyrics

I’m Alright
I guess that I’m alright
I’m up the hill now near McLaren park
I’ve gotten used to lonely nights
The deepest blue before the sky goes dark
For awhile there was someone new
To paper over ancient history
But truer colors started bleeding through
When I remembered how we used to be
If somehow I could take
All our troubled days
Back again
Would we only break
In a different place
Even then
Bought myself a couple years of grace
Working steady living on the cheap
Mornings begging me to keep the faith
Sunlight tangled in a lemon tree
Shined my shoes and shaved my face
Hopeful is as hopeful does
But the daily dawning can’t replace
The one thing I was ever certain of
If somehow I could know
What the future holds
In upraised hands
Maybe I’d let go
Of our long ago
Best laid plans
Bombs are blowing half the world apart
In the cradle of humanity
While I nurse along this broken heart
And wonder if you ever think of me
Occupation equals genocide
I press my lips up to the megaphone
But without you shouting by my side
Ten thousand voices and I’m all alone

SeaweedSway is a collaborative evolving project by Jessie Woletz & many incredible friends over the years, encouraging community through music gatherings especially.

The poem of "SeaweedSway" sprouted in a convo between Karl Blau & Jessie in 2007, when Karl opened for BrightBlack Morning Light at the Great American Music Hall. The music encouraged seaweed-like movement in the room.
