about

Note from Jessie: I learned of Jolie Holland back in 2004, when she played Bimbo's at 365. Catalpa was streamable on her website, and I listened on repeat. (Now I have the record!) I had the treat of seeing her play both in LA this summer, and in Oakland - and was reminded not only of her captivating performance sonically - but also of the way she weaves stories into the show and the songs. She spoke of Orange Blossoms being written at the beginning of Russia bombing the Ukraine, & it struck me how she was able to put such a challenging topic into a song that people could actually hear. It's so easy to avoid the hard stuff because our nervous systems overload, so we can't hear anymore - but in music, we may have more capacity to feel and consider these realms. I'm appreciating more the gift of how music can bring us to hear and feel into hard things in a new way. I appreciate Jolie's naming of the suffering in Palestine too, and her efforts to do more. So grateful she is on this mix! Please enjoy this song.
